Jim Tanner ’79 Cycling across UK

jim-tanner.jpgJim Tanner '79 and his 12 year-old son Luke are riding a tandem bicycle for 1,000 miles betweenLands End in Cornwall, UK to John O'Groats in Scotland to raise money for cancer research.

They started on August 2nd and hope to complete the ride in 10 days. They are riding totally unassisted, relying solely on each other for company, momentum and courage. To meet their goal, they will have to ride approximately 100 miles per day at an average speed of 12 miles per hour with plenty of hills along the way to test their resolve.

Jim, who is a 50 year-old investment manager, and Luke are making this gruelling journey to raise money for The Royal Marsden hospital in London and its new Children's and Teenage Cancer Centre. When completed, it will be Europe's leading facility for children and teenagers. Jim, his wife Victoria and their seven children formerly lived in London before moving to Baharain two years ago.

Nearly two years ago Luke was told that a close friend of his had been diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour. Foruntately he is now well on his way to recovery but during his illness he spent a considerable amount of time at the Royal Marsden hospital. It was this that encouraged Luke to raise money for The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign.

Jim said: "Having done previous fundraising activities, I know what a difference it makes, when you're feeling exhausted, to be cycling for a cause you really believe in. I reassured Luke that when he thought of his friend and the amazing treatment he received, this would spur him on towards the finish line.

Jim was spotlighted in the Spring 2009 Hi-Bazoo. He can be reached after the ride at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
